Limahl has released a new single and video reimagining America’s early ’70s hit “A Horse with No Name.” It’s a rendition that truly blends eras—respecting the original version, modernizing the sound, and simultaneously harkening back to the ’80s era Limahl emerged from and incorporating a distinct ’90s influence.
“The ’90s have been enjoying a revival, which prompted me to experiment with the drums and rhythms from that decade,” he explains. “Then the jerky, ‘Jupiter 8’ analog synthesizer/sequencer was added with a filtering envelope, and it became an important personality in the track.”
Limahl also toyed with the iconic non-lexical “la la” vocal and updated it, restructuring it how it fits into the flow of the song. Renowned session guitarist and music educator Steve Cooper contributed the multi-layered guitar parts.
Originally rising to fame with Kajagoogoo (“Too Shy”), Limahl is also well known for his solo hit “The NeverEnding Story.” Both songs have seen a resurgence thanks to recent soundtrack usage. Limahl has remained active over the years, and was recently seen performing “Too Shy” on the BBC’s Comic Relief TV special.
We did an in-depth interview with Limahl in 2019 when he released the single “Still in Love.” He spoke about his early career, the use of his music in soundtracks, and many other topics. [Click here to read it.]
