Two years after revisiting their Death Cult material with two intimate California club shows, The Cult will embark on a U.S. tour featuring a Death Cult–focused set.
According to frontman Ian Astbury, it was their 40th anniversary that initially led them back to Death Cult.
“This moment will never happen again,” he said in a 2023 interview. “So we decided we should acknowledge this because it’s a huge part of our DNA. I think, in a lot of viewpoints of The Cult, people don’t understand what our actual roots were, how we evolved into what we evolved into, and then devolved again—and are now making records that sound more like a hybrid of Death Cult through, I guess, records like Sonic Temple.”
He added, “It’s surely not a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Really, to play this music you have to be present. I don’t sing like I sang when I was 20 years old—21, 22 years old—and some of these songs we hadn’t played for four decades.”
The group began as Southern Death Cult in 1981, releasing a self-titled album posthumously in 1983. That same year, Astbury and Billy Duffy teamed up as Death Cult, releasing two EPs that would later be combined for CD release. In 1984, the band became The Cult and has since released 11 full-length albums.
After those initial 2023 U.S. shows, the group went on to do a UK tour focused on Death Cult material. For the upcoming shows, they will also perform a set of The Cult songs. Patriarchy will be the opening act.
